Sam Robertson

Managing Director | Commercial Law

Sam qualified as an attorney in 2001 and began his career at Cliffe Dekker, where he practised until 2007. He went on to work with Media24 and Mark Shuttleworth, and later co-founded a start-up that grew into a 200-person enterprise. In 2018, he returned to legal practice by starting his own firm.

After consulting to GSR Law and leading its Corporate and Commercial Department from 2022, Sam was appointed to the firm’s board in 2024.

With a focus on Mergers and Acquisitions and Environmental and Energy Law, Sam brings a strong business-minded approach shaped by his time outside traditional legal practice. Passionate about negotiation, he has advised and represented clients not just as an attorney but also as a trusted corporate business adviser.

Outside of work, Sam enjoys cycling and discovering great wine.

Ulrik Strandvik

CEO | Property and Fiduciary Law

Ulrik joined GSR Law in 2001 as a candidate attorney and has since become a named partner and CEO. With a background in conveyancing, he has built a strong reputation as a specialist in Property Law, consulting and training extensively in the field.

He also holds a Master’s Degree in Tax from UCT and is a recognised expert in Fiduciary Law, particularly in trusts and tax. Ulrik has delivered numerous presentations on topics such as trust taxation, the evolving South African tax landscape, and cross-border tax issues affecting expats and foreign investors.

Outside the office, you’ll find him running, going on adventures with his family, or reading (when he can find the time!).

Tracey Steele

Associate Director | Fiduciary

Tracey completed her BComm (Law) and LLB at Stellenbosch in 1997. She worked at a small general practice in the Cape Town City Bowl for 19 years, gaining experience across a range of legal fields including estates, family law, curatorship, debt collecting, and conveyancing.

After years as a general practitioner, Tracey chose to specialise in conveyancing and joined GSR Law in April 2015 as an associate in the Transfers Department. She has since been promoted to associate director and now heads up our Estates Team.

Tracey also enjoys leisurely walks with her dog, reading, and wine tasting at the many beautiful wine farms Cape Town has to offer.

Frances Lancaster

Candidate Attorney

Frances joined GSR Law as a candidate attorney in January 2025 after completing her LLB at the University of Cape Town in 2024.

She was awarded the Spoor & Fisher Prize for Intellectual Property in April 2025 for achieving the highest mark in trademarks and unlawful competition, and confirmed her passion for commercial litigation after winning the CALS Public Interest Law Moot at the Constitutional Court in 2024.

Frances brings her energy and enthusiasm for litigation into everything she does at GSR. Outside the office, she enjoys hiking in the mountains with her small and energetic dog, Sadie – often with a Coffee Freezo from Vida in hand.

Farisai Jaka

Candidate Attorney

Farisai joined GSR Law as a candidate attorney in January 2026 after completing her LLB at the University of Cape Town in 2025. She currently works as a Candidate Attorney at in the Commercial Litigation Department.

Farisai is a driven individual whose experiences in mooting, legal drafting, and research have inspired her interest in Company Law and Commercial Litigation, and she is eager to contribute meaningfully to GSR Law and the legal profession.

Outside of law, Farisai pursues her creative interests, including painting and singing. She also loves exploring Cape Town and is always up for a scenic walk or relaxed run.

Chantelle Matemavi

Associate | Conveyancing

Chantelle joined GSR Law in January 2024 as a candidate attorney and has since completed her articles.

She holds a BA in Law and an LLB – both earned cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is currently based in the Conveyancing Department.

Passionate about continuous growth, and has been admitted as an attorney - and conveyancer - of the High Court, in August 2025.

Chantelle also enjoys going to the gym, spending time with her family, and never misses a Formula 1 race weekend.

Aviwe Vezi

Junior Conveyancer | Conveyancing

Aviwe Vezi is a dedicated and versatile legal professional who brings a well-rounded skill set to the conveyancing department. She graduated with Merit from the University of Zululand in 2019, was admitted as an Attorney in 2021, and subsequently as a Notary Public and Conveyancer in 2022.

Aviwe specialises in both bond registrations and property transfers, including bond cancellations, and prides herself on being an all-rounder in the conveyancing space. Her attention to detail, proactive communication, and client-focused approach ensure smooth and efficient transactions from start to finish.

Outside of the office, Aviwe enjoys spending time outdoors and attending social events, embracing a lifestyle that values both connection and balance.
